'tis Autumn. So naturally a young man's thoughts turn to.. stuffing

Chimneys, that is, should you have them. With a hat tip to FoE, I was impressed by the savings that could be enjoyed by - WHEN NOT ALIGHT - blocking the chimney up temporarily to deny yet another source of heat loss.

There was also a lead to this merry band, or, if you are of a more DIY Junkkly bent, I'm on the case. The old Reebok medicine ball is looking favorite. With a nice warning dangly-doobry to remind one to remove prior to a stoke or two.

  1. Just one little word of warning. Chimneys, especially in older houses, are often the major ventilation route. Block them all up and you lose your main source of ventilation.

I have seen many older house that have been modernised and upgraded with double glazing and new tight fitting doors and which have had all of the old chimneys bricked up. OK, the house is more efficient, heating wise, but it also now has high humidity, poor quality air and becomes prone to damp, mildew and condensation. Not only unhealthy, (actually quite dangerous to asthma sufferers), but now providing ideal breeding conditions for House Dust Mite, itself a key asthma trigger.

  2. Makes sense. And noted. Ta.

Plus the kind of consideration that needs to be shared (or debated) in our headlong rushes to do (or pay for) anything in the name of 'green' that might not have been thought through as well it might.

I believe in freedom of speech. But I also don't like bullies on blogs, even verbal ones, as they can drive away those with something valid to say... or offer.

Subjective is fine, but well argued and substantiated is even better. Calm and polite tops. Anything that crosses my personal line will not go up. There may be reasons given, but not guaranteed.

I'm not too keen on 'Anon' as a handle (and the content usually explains why), so if that's what you opt for it may not make it. Sorry.
