Big Oil returning to Iraq?

I have to confess I wondered how long it might be before the big oil boys started to try to get back into Iraq. This from the Independent reports that they are already negotiating their return with the Iraqi government.

So overthrowing Saddam was, hmmmmmm, solely about weapons of mass destruction? Methinks likely not.

Addendum:
Looks like I'm not the only one pondering that last statement - see this very enlightening article from ukwatch.net, which suggests that peak oil concerns were the primary reason for the war in Iraq.

  1. Oh heck. Just when my faith in, well, almost everything, but especially the conduct and competency of the establishment, couldn't get much lower... I read this.

I still cling to the innocent hope that all this planet and those upon it (some more than others) have been put through of late has not been for something as crass as squeezing out a few more litres of a finite resource at a price that suits.

If so, and proven, there needs to be a reckoning.

  2. It is rather beginning to look like the whole sorry episode was triggered by desire for more of the black stuff from the ground.

Just a thought, but suppose Zimbabwe happened to have some large oil fields? I wonder if the apparent 'ignore it and let it be' approach might just be amended slightly?

I believe in freedom of speech. But I also don't like bullies on blogs, even verbal ones, as they can drive away those with something valid to say... or offer.

Subjective is fine, but well argued and substantiated is even better. Calm and polite tops. Anything that crosses my personal line will not go up. There may be reasons given, but not guaranteed.

I'm not too keen on 'Anon' as a handle (and the content usually explains why), so if that's what you opt for it may not make it. Sorry.
